The story
Richard & Lindsey Johns are the couple behind this award-winning 15th-century pub and restaurant in the North Yorkshire village of Wombleton, three miles from Helmsley. The Plough has been serving food and refreshments to weary travellers since 1498, and the Johns are proud to continue that tradition with the best local produce and a warm Yorkshire welcome.
The cornerstone of The Plough is its food. Award-winning chef and owner Richard cooks personally for every guest, working unaided in his kitchen. The menu is seasonal, considered, and almost everything is made from scratch. The style is described as timeless, hearty dishes with a modern twist and plenty of Yorkshire generosity. This approach has earned the pub recognition in the esteemed Estrella Top 50 UK Gastropubs just three months after opening, a listing in the 2024 Good Food Guide, and a place in the 2025 Michelin Guide.
The Plough is located in the centre of Wombleton, surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the North Yorkshire Moors and the Howardian Hills. The restaurant is intimate, with a limited number of tables and just one chef, so booking in advance is highly recommended. Walk-ins are welcomed, but tables fill quickly. The bar is open to walk-ins Wednesday to Sunday, with restaurant reservations available Thursday to Sunday.
