The story

Lunya: Authentic Catalan Cooking in Liverpool’s City Centre

Origins and Kitchen Philosophy

Lunya has served authentic Catalan cooking in Liverpool since opening its doors in 2010. The Kinsella family built their reputation on direct relationships with regional producers rather than chasing trends. Recent recognition from The Good Food Guide highlights the venue’s genuine warmth and consistent execution. Their expertise now extends beyond the dining room through an extensive online shop that curates over thirteen hundred hand selected Spanish products for home kitchens.

Plates and Regional Flavour

The menu balances meat, fish, and vegetables with equal care across a broad selection of small plates. Morning visitors often start with migras, a country breakfast featuring cured meats sautéed with breadcrumbs and topped with a soft poached egg. Midday orders frequently highlight morcilla balls coated in cornflakes and glazed with orange blossom honey and pomegranate molasses. Roasted parsnips tossed in maple syrup and finished with dukkah appear alongside a Catalan interpretation of local scouse.

Space and Libations

A large red map anchors one wall while open kitchen windows frame daily preparations. Guests can claim a seat inside or step out into the bright courtyard when the weather turns favourable. The bar matches the kitchen’s regional focus by stocking a diverse array of Spanish wines, sherries, and craft gins. Dinners typically conclude with vanilla ice cream paired with almond turrón and PX soaked raisins.

The Good Food Guide — Good

‘A welcoming place with real heart and passion,’ the Kinsella family’s authentic Catalan tapas joint and deli has been one of the city's roaring success stories of the past few years, offering a taste of sun-splashed Spanish tradition beamed into the Liverpool One shopping complex. A large red map dominates one wall for geographical orientation, while views into the kitchen are an education in themselves, assuming you haven't opted to sit out in the bright Merseyside sunshine. Kick-start the day with a traditional Catalan migas (country breakfast) of cured meats sautéed with breadcrumbs, onion and garlic, topped with a poached egg. The full menu gives meat, fish and vegetables (almost) equal billing. Here you’ll find everything from fragrant morcilla balls coated in cornflakes and slathered with a rich sauce of orange-blossom honey and pomegranate molasses to boquerones from Cantabria's finest (Pujadó Solano), accompanied by Spanish potato crisps – not forgetting roasted parsnips tossed in maple syrup and dusted with dukkah. There are also deli platters aplenty, as well as big pans of paella and tasting banquets for the whole table to plunder; they even serve a Catalan riff on Liverpool’s classic ‘scouse’. Round things off with vanilla ice cream served with turrón and pelted with PX-drenched raisins. Gins are almost as much of a speciality as sherries, and there is a regionally diverse slate of artisan Spanish wines in two glass sizes from around £6.80.
