The story
In 2013, a run-down country pub on the edge of Newbury began its transformation. The Woodspeen emerged as a beautiful, contemporary restaurant and cocktail bar, designed around a picture window that frames the West Berkshire countryside and an open kitchen where guests watch the chefs at work.
The vision is clear: exceptional dishes built from the best ingredients each season offers, delivered with warm, attentive service alongside carefully chosen wines and cocktails. The result is an elegant yet understated space that quickly became a destination for business lunches, intimate dinners, and special occasions.
The kitchen’s modern cuisine draws directly from the seasons. A kitchen garden supplies the cookery school, and the restaurant’s menu reflects that connection—fresh, vibrant, and grounded in what grows locally. The Woodspeen is recognised for its seasonal garden-to-table approach, earning a place in the Michelin Guide, where it is recommended for its kitchen garden and contemporary flavours.
Three AA Rosettes for culinary excellence further underline the cooking’s quality, while the wine list has collected accolades from both the AA and Wine Spectator.
A stone’s throw from the main restaurant, the Woodspeen Cookery School occupies a beautifully converted barn overlooking the vegetable garden. It hosts a range of hands-on courses, from seafood and French classics to parent-child workshops, all taught by the restaurant’s own senior chefs. The school also offers Chef’s Table experiences for private dining, where small groups can watch a chef cook just feet away and talk ingredients and technique.
The destination cocktail bar is another draw—a chic spot for casual drinks that stands apart from the dining room. Whether for a leisurely lunch, a Sunday roast, or an evening of classic cocktails, The Woodspeen occupies a distinct place in the local community, designed for both casual meals and celebrations alike.
