The story
In the heart of the fishing village of Porthleven, The Square at Porthleven sits directly above the working harbour, its terrace a front-row seat for the comings and goings of boats. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuinely welcoming—the kind of place where you can stop for coffee and cake in the morning, linger over a lunch of locally caught fish, or settle in for a leisurely dinner as the light fades over the water. The brasserie-style menu changes daily, reflecting what the chef finds from the region’s best suppliers.
The kitchen’s philosophy is straightforward: local is best. Fish, shellfish, meats and vegetables are all sourced from a network of Cornish producers, and the drinks list highlights Cornish alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. This commitment to quality and place has earned The Square at Porthleven a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that recognises good food at moderate prices. The menu never repeats exactly—what arrives on your plate depends on the morning’s catch and the season’s harvest. House-made ice creams, flavoured with natural ingredients and changing with the seasons, are a signature finish.
The restaurant opens Tuesday to Sunday, serving breakfast coffee and cake from 9:30am, lunch from 12pm to 2pm, and dinner from 5:30pm. On warmer days, the partially covered terrace is the place to be. Dogs are welcome inside and out, as long as they are well-behaved. A dedicated children’s menu means families feel at home too. Whether you are stopping by for a quick bite or settling in for an evening of modern British cuisine, the team’s warmth and the harbour views make every visit memorable.
