The story
The Swan Inn sits in the village of Fittleworth, within the South Downs. A beautifully preserved 14th-century coaching inn, it operates as a community pub, bar, and dining room. The atmosphere blends old-world charm with modern comfort, and the guest list has always been eclectic—from local regulars to visitors from afar.
The kitchen’s philosophy is straightforward: rustic, unfussy, and proud of the classics. Menus change with the landscape. Meat and game come from local farms, and fish is landed daily on the Sussex Coast. The South Downs lamb is sourced from farmer Jeremy Way, just two miles away. Wild Flower honey comes from the orchard down the road.
You’ll always find a cheeseburger or a generous slab of farmhouse cheddar with a ploughman’s lunch. In winter, expect hearty braises and suet crust pies. In summer, grilled fish caught that morning and simple vegetable dishes. And no English meal is complete without pudding—the Sussex Pond pudding, steamed and oozing with lemony butter and sugar, is a staple.
The wine list ranges from classic to quirky, focused on European producers with minimal intervention. There are also off-menu bottles in the cellar. Taps are dominated by British breweries, especially those from Sussex, alongside craft ciders and perries.
The main dining room serves the ever-changing à la carte menu. For groups of 12 to 26, The Barn offers a set feasting menu of sharing dishes—slow-roasted joints, whole fish, one-pot wonders. In summer, the sunny Courtyard and Garden open for alfresco dining. The Garden has a wood-fired pizza kitchen and homemade soft serve ice cream.
The Swan Inn holds a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a testament to its consistent cooking and commitment to local, seasonal ingredients. It’s a destination for anyone seeking a genuinely good British pub meal in West Sussex.
