The story
Set in Bamburgh, The Potted Lobster traces its roots to November 2015 when local chef Richard Sim established the venue as a bistro-style eatery. The kitchen now centres its seafood menu on ingredients sourced directly from surrounding harbours and farms, working closely with partners like Rockpool fish and shellfish and Doddington Dairy. This focus on quality and local supply helped the restaurant gain spots in the Michelin Guide editions from 2018 to 2021, along with a 'Good' accolade in the 2026 Good Food Guide.
Locally landed lobsters anchor the seafood lineup, featured in a signature potted preparation bulked with shrimps and crayfish alongside classic riffs like poached lobster with garlic mayo and grilled lobster thermidor. Starters frequently include bowls of Shetland mussels or a smoked trout and leek tart, leading to mains where pan-fried halibut appears with lobster mayo and langoustines turn up on the specials board. Diners seeking meat options can choose rump of lamb served with red wine jus and homemade mint sauce.
The dining room embraces a maritime theme built around blue-and-white decor, blond furniture, and seafood prints displayed on wooden planks, creating the impression of an upmarket beach hut. The atmosphere stays buzzy while knowledgeable staff stand by to explain daily specials and menu choices. A designated dog-friendly section supports the restaurant's relaxed ethos, keeping the environment welcoming for guests travelling with animals.
Seasonal desserts feature a baba laced with sloe gin rather than rum and a glazed lemon tart served with fresh raspberries. Beverages showcase local craft through beers from Alnwick Brewery, while the wine list receives strong attention for its extensive international selection of grape varieties and styles. These pairings support the diverse menu, providing clear options to accompany both the lighter shellfish plates and heartier meat courses.
