The story

Number Eight Sevenoaks | Award-Winning Modern European Dining

The Kitchen and Culinary Approach

Number Eight in Sevenoaks delivers refined modern European cuisine inside a quiet clapboard building tucked just off the town centre. Owner-chef Stuart Gillies and his wife Cecilia apply decades of hospitality leadership to a kitchen that prioritises seasonal produce and reliable local suppliers. The roster shifts frequently to accommodate visiting collaborators, including an Italian cuisine night that revisited Stuart’s formative years working in Rome. Ingredients travel short distances, arriving at the pass ready for precise execution rather than theatrical presentation.

Plates and Seasonal Focus

Pan-roasted sea bream arrives with crisp skin alongside samphire, crushed new potatoes, and a sharp citrus beurre blanc. Regional Chart Farm sirloin steak rests simply beside Café de Paris butter, letting quality meat dictate the seasoning. A dense Basque cheesecake folded with Kentish strawberries ends the meal without excess sugar. Weekday visitors often opt for the two-course set menu, which turns over weekly to reflect whatever arrives fresh from nearby farms and fisheries.

Space, Libations and Recognition

The dining area maintains a cosy bistro layout that comfortably seats families and welcomes dogs throughout the week. A broad bar behind the main floor pours crafted cocktails and draft beers while the wine list focuses primarily on European regions with bottles beginning at twenty-eight pounds. Curated tasting evenings occasionally bring English vineyard makers into the room for direct pour sessions. This consistent attention to relaxed service and grounded food recently secured a Good rating in The Good Food Guide, distinguishing the spot from the surrounding high street chains.

The Good Food Guide — Good

‘The best restaurant by far in Sevenoaks,’ is praise indeed, and there’s no shortage of vocal support for this local eatery – a lone independent in a ‘sea of high-street chains’ and also ‘a great place to take family, children (and dogs)’. But then Stuart Gillies has skin in the game. The chef (and former CEO of the Gordon Ramsay Group), has brought his unique experience gained working for some global big hitters to this charming clapboard building set back from the town's main drag – and you can see the results in the comfortable, easy-on-the-eye look of the dining room, in the young, clued-up service, and in the no-nonsense menu offering plenty of appealing and flexible ideas. At our meal, crisp, pan-roasted fillet of sea bream served with asparagus, samphire, citrus beurre blanc and crushed new potatoes delivered bags of satisfaction, while Basque cheesecake with Kentish strawberries proved to be happy bedfellows. Elsewhere, staples such as local Chart Farm sirloin steak with Café de Paris butter – as well as a good-value Sunday roast – show the kitchen is willing to do populist things (and do them well). The short set menu (available weekday lunches and some early evenings) is excellent value, too. To drink, there are cocktails and a well-annotated, mainly European wine list that opens at a commendable £28.
