The story
Mother is built around a single, living thing: a sourdough starter affectionately called the “mother.” This culture of wild yeast and bacteria, fed and maintained over time, produces breads that undergo a slow, natural fermentation. The process breaks down gluten, improves digestibility, and introduces lactic and acetic acids for a deeper, more complex flavor. It is, as the team puts it, “science in theory, art when in the hands of some, and love when shared with others.”
Heidi, whose kitchen adventures began with boxed cake mixes in the rural South, eventually moved to the mountains of North Carolina and fell in love with the craft of sourdough while working in local bakeries. When she felt the pull to connect more directly with her community, she started Mother — listening to friends, neighbors, and chefs to develop the breads they craved, from nostalgic childhood recipes to loaves that pair perfectly with a special menu item.
Brett brings a passion for human connection, honed during a cycling trip through Argentina and later deepened through Neapolitan pizza and wine at San Francisco’s Del Popolo. His expertise in wine grew from relationships with small producers around the world. At Mother, he focuses on demystifying wine — stripping away point scores and stuffy jargon — because the most valuable wine, he says, is “any which is humbly shared around the table amongst friends.”
Located at 244 Short Coxe Avenue in Asheville’s South Slope, Mother operates as a café, bread shop, and wine bar. It serves brunch, lunch, and après midi from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm. The space welcomes guests for takeaway, delivery, or outdoor seating, and offers Wi-Fi and vegetarian-friendly options.
Mother’s commitment to quality and value earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026 — a nod to the kind of thoughtful, accessible cooking that defines the best of contemporary brunch and bakery culture in Asheville. The team regularly hosts wine dinners and educational tastings, like “The Language of Place,” led by Brett, that explore small-producer wines from Corsica and beyond. At its heart, Mother is a place where bread, wine, and community come together naturally — no pretension, just good things shared.
