The story
Fred's Meat & Bread occupies a stall in Atlanta's Krog Street Market, a food hall that Bon Appétit once called “one of the country’s coolest food markets.” The concept is simple: classic sandwiches, hand-cut fries, and old-school sodas, executed with precision. The team behind it—Rye Restaurants, including chef Todd Ginsberg, Shelley Sweet, and Jennifer & Ben Johnson—also runs The General Muir and Yalla, the latter a sister stall serving falafel in the same market.
The restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026, a designation that celebrates good quality, good value cooking. Michelin inspectors singled out the cheesesteak, calling it “the best sandwiches in North America” and noting that “this iteration easily put many [in Philly] to shame.” The inspectors’ take: “This Atlanta spot lets the main ingredients shine without gilding the lily with extras or anything unnecessary. The meat and bread were very good quality.”
The menu centers on a few standouts: the cheesesteak, a juicy, messy affair built on high-quality beef and a proper roll, and a “flawless burger” that Bon Appétit praised in 2015. Both are American cuisine at its most direct and satisfying. Fred’s policy is clear: no substitutions or additions, only omissions. They ask guests to note allergies before ordering. The fries are hand-cut, the sodas are old-school, and the whole operation runs with a no-fuss efficiency.
Located at 99 Krog Street, the stall is open daily for lunch and dinner, with outdoor seating available and wheelchair access. The market itself is a lively, air-conditioned space with parking and Beltline access. Fred’s also caters and offers delivery through Wonder in New York and New Jersey. The name? Frederick Krog, the man for whom the street and market are named—and, as the restaurant notes, it rhymes with bread.
