The story
Miller Union takes its name from the 1880s stockyards that once occupied a full city block in Atlanta's old meatpacking district. When chef Steven Satterfield and general manager Neal McCarthy opened the restaurant in 2009, they transformed a refurbished warehouse on that historic site into a warm, rustic-modern dining room that has since become an anchor for the neighborhood. The space respects its industrial past while feeling fresh and welcoming — a place where sophistication and comfort coexist.
Chef Satterfield, a James Beard Foundation Award winner for Best Chef: Southeast, cooks in an organic way, letting the ever-changing harvest of Georgia’s farms dictate the menu. His style is simple yet refined, with a lean on Southern history. The food is ingredient-driven and deeply seasonal — from spring peas to summer tomatoes to autumn squash. This approach, which Satterfield has chronicled in his cookbooks Root to Leaf and Vegetable Revelations, has earned Miller Union praise from Bon Appétit, The New York Times, and Food & Wine, as well as a Michelin Recommended distinction.
Neal McCarthy, a certified sommelier, curates a dynamic wine list that focuses on small producers with sustainable, biodynamic, and organic farming practices. The list has been recognized by Wine Enthusiast as one of the top 100 in the country, and Miller Union was a multiple-year James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Outstanding Wine Program. Every pour is chosen to complement Satterfield’s simple, Southern-inspired cooking — and the restaurant’s broader commitment to sustainability.
In summer, Miller Union highlights the region’s bounty with its Friday Market Menu: a four-course prix fixe experience at $65 per person. Guests select from two choices for each course, and the menu shifts weekly based on what’s freshest from nearby farms. It’s a personal, distinctly seasonal way to experience the kitchen’s ingredient-driven philosophy.
With its farm-to-table American cuisine, thoughtful wine program, and welcoming atmosphere, Miller Union remains a cornerstone of Atlanta’s dining scene.
