The story
Mujō is a modern Edomae-style sushiya in Atlanta, led by James Beard finalist Executive Chef J. Trent Harris. The restaurant is inspired by the Japanese concept of ichi-go ichi-e, or “one time, one meeting” — a philosophy that makes every meal singular and unrepeatable. This commitment to the present moment is reflected in the daily-changing omakase menu, which draws on the best seasonal ingredients and fish flown in directly from Japan.
Guests choose between the Sushi Bar and the intimate Koshitsu Counter, both offering an immersive setting where the team’s precision is on full display. The meal begins with a series of small plates (zensai), such as Florida cobia grilled over binchotan with red miso sauce and local pattypan squash, followed by a progression of seasonal nigiri. Each piece of fish is lightly aged for texture and flavor, delivered on seasoned rice at a precise temperature. A supplemental menu of specialty items is available daily. The atmosphere is warm and luxurious, with service that makes each guest feel like the center of the evening.
The meticulous craft at Mujō has earned it a Michelin star, placing it among Atlanta’s finest restaurants. Critics have called it the best restaurant experience in Atlanta, noting the seamless interplay of food, drink, and conversation. Chef Harris, a Kentucky-raised chef with nearly 20 years of experience at renowned sushi restaurants including Sushi Ginza Onodera, works alongside Executive Sushi Chef Tomoyuki Hayashi and a dedicated team of chefs and service staff. The result is a singular evening of Edomae-style Japanese cuisine that honors tradition while feeling entirely of the moment.
