The story
Since 1962, Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop has been a cornerstone of the East Austin community, serving classic Tex-Mex breakfast and lunch. The story begins even earlier, in 1935, when Joe Avila’s mother and stepfather opened La Oriental Grocery & Bakery. Joe, who apprenticed under his stepfather, took over the family business in 1962 and soon expanded it from a bakery into a full restaurant. Today, the restaurant is managed by the fourth generation of the Avila family, a testament to their perseverance and commitment to the community.
The menu is a celebration of Tex-Mex staples, all made with family recipes. Breakfast is served all day, featuring favorites like the Huevos Rancheros Plate, the Joey Rocha Breakfast with pork carne guisada, and a wide array of breakfast tacos on homemade flour tortillas. After 10:30 am, the lunch menu offers classics such as the Enchilada Plate and the Barbacoa Plate. The bakery case is filled daily with traditional pan dulce and other sweet treats, available until they run out.
Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop is a true Austin original, a place where generations of families have gathered. Its status as a Michelin Recommended restaurant in 2026 reflects the quality and consistency of the food, but the true draw is the warm, welcoming atmosphere and the taste of history in every bite.
