The story
At KG BBQ in Austin, the familiar scent of post oak and smoked brisket carries a surprising twist—cumin, coriander, and the warm spices of Egypt. This is the vision of KG, the self-styled Egyptian Cowboy, who left a corporate finance career in Cairo in 2016 after a single, life-changing bite of Texas barbecue.
“Many people describe their introductory Texas barbecue experience as ‘life-changing,’ but few have the receipts to show for it,” wrote the Austin Chronicle. For KG, that first brisket spurred a move across the globe. He enrolled in culinary school, apprenticed with Austin’s best pit masters, and then began layering his own heritage onto the tradition. The result is a barbecue that feels both deeply Texan and entirely new—smoked meats seasoned with blends inspired by the Middle East, served with sides that nod to his upbringing.
KG BBQ operates out of Oddwood Brewing on Manor Road, open Thursday through Sunday until sold out. The menu changes but always centers on the pit: brisket, ribs, and sausage, given KG’s signature treatment. Think beef shawarma-inspired tacos, lamb merguez, and sides like Egyptian rice with crispy vermicelli. It’s bold, unapologetic fusion that honors both the smoke ring and the spice souk.
In 2026, the Michelin Guide awarded KG BBQ a Bib Gourmand, recognizing it as “good quality, good value cooking.” The accolade fits a place that serves premium smoked meats in a relaxed brewery setting—no pretense, just flavor. The restaurant also offers catering, brisket 101 classes, and a “Lambassador” loyalty program for regulars.
Whether you come for the brisket or the baharat, KG BBQ is proof that Austin’s barbecue tradition still has room for new stories.
