The story
A café in East Austin, Texas, Mercado Sin Nombre focuses on two things: Mexican heirloom corn and specialty Mexican coffee. Both are treated with uncommon care — the coffee beans are sourced from small farms in Mexico and roasted in Austin, the corn appears across a tight, thoughtful menu that changes with the seasons.
The setting is low-key: a semi-clandestine counter on Pleasant Valley Road with outdoor seating and a relaxed, morning-to-early-afternoon pace. It’s a place where a single dish can stop you. Their honey bun — a coiled, cardamom-scented pastry described as “plush and elegant” — is one example. The biscuit, which takes 100 hours to make, arrives toasted with espresso butter and green tomato jam, or folded into a breakfast sandwich. Masa pancakes and burritos round out the offerings, alongside a handful of daily specials.
Mercado Sin Nombre earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, recognition for good quality, good value cooking. They were also named James Beard semifinalists for Outstanding Bakery in 2026 — a nod to the craft that runs through every item here. The American and Mexican cuisines meet naturally, with heirloom corn as the anchor.
Beyond the café, they offer catering, a coffee cart for events, and whole-bean coffee for home brewing. It’s a small, focused operation that rewards repeat visits.
