The story
Mexta is the work of two chefs with distinct paths who share a deep commitment to Mexican cuisine. Chef Jonatan Gómez Luna Torres, a graduate of Centro Culinario Ambrosía in Mexico City, honed his skills in Michelin-starred kitchens around the world. He is recognized as part of the “new generation of Mexican chefs.” Chef Mikel Alonso originally trained as a chemical engineer before following his passion for cooking, studying at Luis Irizar Cooking School and earning a scholarship that led him to become a highly respected chef in Mexico. Together, they bring a combined expertise that elevates every dish.
Mexta describes itself as “a symphony of vibrant colors,” an invitation to experience Mexican gastronomy where authenticity meets innovation. The restaurant is located in the historic Littlefield Building on East 6th Street in downtown Austin. The interior and the food both aim to merge history with contemporary flair, creating a space that feels both welcoming and refined.
The menu at Mexta is Contemporary Mexican, drawing on traditional techniques and ingredients while incorporating modern touches. Starters include The Real One Guacamole, made with Michoacan Hass avocado and ground green tomato, served with onion ash. The Stuffed Pepper from the “Milpa” features a roasted poblano stuffed with squash blossom, huitlacoche, corn, and Oaxacan string cheese. For seafood lovers, the Baja-Style Shrimp Taco uses wild red shrimp with dark beer batter, and the Pacific Red Snapper Ceviche follows a traditional Pacific coast recipe. Mains range from Filet Mignon with Black Mole to a Tikin Xic Salmon with xni-pec and grandmother’s black beans. Desserts like Chocomaíz, a chocolate metate brownie with salted butter toffee, and Flan de la Abuela, a classic custard, round out the meal.
Mexta earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026, a testament to the quality of its Contemporary Mexican cuisine and the skill of its chefs. It is a place for those who seek not just a meal, but a memorable encounter with Mexican culinary traditions, reimagined for today.
