The story
La Marcha Tapas Bar, from Gran Via Restaurant Group, brings the lively, communal spirit of Spanish dining to Berkeley. The name itself refers to the cherished Spanish tradition of late-night bar-hopping—moving from place to place, sharing small plates, wine, and conversation. That ethos is alive here, where every meal feels like a gathering. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a testament to its dedication to authentic Spanish cuisine.
The kitchen is led by chefs Sergio Monleón and Emily Sarlatte. Monleón, a Bay Area native with deep Spanish roots, learned the art of paella from his grandmother. His training in both Spain and the U.S. gives his cooking a grounding in tradition with room for creativity. Sarlatte, with a background in nutrition and culinary arts, focuses on sourcing high-quality, sustainable ingredients. Together, they craft a menu that is both soulful and refined.
Paella is the signature dish. Made with Bomba rice, house stock, saffron, and tomato sofrito, it requires 30–45 minutes of patience—and it’s worth the wait. San Francisco Chronicle critic Michael Bauer called it “paella, perfected.” Options range from the classic Valenciana with duck, rabbit, and snails to the arroz negro with squid ink and clams.
The tapas menu is equally compelling. Duck confit croquetas with ras al hanout and date harissa jam. Octopus with fennel, pollen, and parsnip purée. Wagyu cheeks with cacao and peanut picada. Even the patatas bravas get a twist with za’atar aioli and nori. Vegetables are treated with care: Brussels sprouts with Pedro Ximénez balsamic, cauliflower with mojo picón, and broccolini with hazelnut-pistachio romesco.
La Marcha is a place to linger. Happy Hour runs twice daily—weekdays from 4–6 PM and late night on Fridays and Saturdays—where the Spanish tradition of complimentary tapas with every drink comes to life. Brunch, voted one of Berkeley’s best, is a relaxed, drawn-out affair. The dining room is welcoming, with air conditioning and wheelchair access. Whether you’re at the bar for a glass of sherry or sharing a pan of paella with friends, the energy is warm and unhurried.
Beyond the Michelin nod, La Marcha has been named among the Top 5 Spanish Restaurants in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle and has earned multiple Best of the Bay and Diners’ Choice awards. It is also recognized by Restaurants from Spain, a designation from the Spanish government for establishments that faithfully represent Spanish gastronomy. The commitment to authenticity extends to sourcing: local farms, sustainable seafood, and trusted Spanish producers. Every ingredient is chosen with care, from the Bomba rice to the seasonal produce.
La Marcha is Spanish cuisine as it should be—vibrant, communal, and deeply rooted in tradition.
