Chef Damien DiPaola’s family-inspired Sicilian dishes, a Michelin nod, and an intimate open-kitchen on Hanover Street – Boston’s Little Italy.

The story

Carmelina's | Boston's Michelin-Recommended Sicilian Comfort Food in the North End

An Inspired Twist on Tradition

On Hanover Street, in the heart of Boston’s North End, Carmelina’s serves what it calls “traditional Sicilian comfort food with a Mediterranean twist.” Owned by Executive Chef Damien DiPaola and run with Chef di Cucina Michael Hollenkamp, the restaurant opened in 2012 and has since become a local favorite, earning a spot in the Michelin Guide – one of the first Boston restaurants to receive the recommendation.

The menu draws from DiPaola’s own family recipes, reimagined as modern Italian-American dishes built around fresh pasta and seafood. The kitchen is open, mother-approved, and lined with family photos, creating an intimate, home-like atmosphere. In warmer months, retractable front walls open the space to the street, allowing for open-air dining. The small dining room encourages a focused, unhurried meal – tables are booked in 90-minute blocks, and the staff asks that guests order their complete meal when ready, with one ticket per table to help the chefs.

Neighborhood Roots and Celebrity Guests

Carmelina’s has been praised by Phantom Gourmet (“nobody does Italian comfort food like Carmelina’s”) and Zagat, which noted the “huge lines” for its “delicious, fresh” pastas. The restaurant’s reputation extends beyond critics: in 2014, Benedict Cumberbatch and the cast of Black Mass dined family-style on meatballs, exploding clams, and black garlic beef. DiPaola later said of the actor, “He loved the atmosphere.”

The chef is also a vocal advocate for authentic Italian food in the North End, once telling Boston.com that chain restaurants like Olive Garden “have nothing Italian on their menu” and that “all these neighborhood people do it the right way, with integrity.” That conviction is evident in every dish.

Sicilian Comfort at Its Best

The cooking is unpretentious and deeply flavored. Standouts from the press mentions include baked meatballs with a memorably good tomato sauce, and rollati di pasta – fresh pasta stuffed with prosciutto, spinach, and fontina, baked until bubbly. The wine list, with over 50 selections, leans heavily on Italian bottles, from Sicilian Grillo to Piedmontese Barbera.

Carmelina’s is a small, family-run spot that delivers exactly what it promises: honest, satisfying Sicilian-Italian food, made with care and conviction. That – and a Michelin recommendation – is what keeps the reservations booked weeks in advance.
