The story
At Jahunger in Cambridge, the food tells a story centuries in the making. Uyghur cuisine, a unique blend of Central Asian and Chinese influences, is the foundation here. The kitchen draws on traditions of hand-pulled noodles, skewered meats, and aromatic rice dishes that have been passed down through generations. The menu, written in both English and Chinese, is a direct invitation to explore these flavors.
The dining room is straightforward and welcoming, focused on the food. Start with samsa – a baked lamb pastry with a crisp shell – or kavap, charcoal-grilled lamb skewers seasoned with cumin and chili. The laghman noodle (过油肉拌面) is a standout: thick, chewy noodles tossed with stir-fried lamb and vegetables in a savory sauce. PoLo (新疆手抓饭), the Uyghur pilaf, is studded with tender lamb and carrots, fragrant and satisfying. For a shareable dish, the chicken stew (大盘鸡) comes as a generous portion of braised chicken and potatoes. Finish with a bowl of home-made yogurt, thick and tangy, made in the traditional Uyghur style.
The restaurant’s commitment to authentic, high-quality cooking has earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand – a nod to both value and skill. The same team also runs a Providence location, where their work has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation and multiple “Best of Rhode Island” awards. In Cambridge, Jahunger brings that same dedication to the table, offering a taste of Uyghur culture that is both rare and genuine.
