Wa Shin: An Omakase Experience in Boston

In the heart of Boston, Wa Shin brings the precision and artistry of Japanese omakase dining to an intimate counter. The name itself—Wa (和) meaning harmony, Shin (心) meaning heart—speaks to the restaurant’s philosophy of balance and intention. This commitment to harmony has earned Wa Shin a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition that underscores the quality of the experience.

The restaurant is the vision of Executive Chef Sky Zheng, whose training traces a direct line to the highest echelons of sushi craftsmanship. Chef Zheng was mentored by Master Chef Daisuke Nakazawa, the protégé of the legendary Jiro Ono, star of the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi. After rigorous training at Nakazawa’s Michelin-starred New York restaurant, Chef Zheng has brought his talent to Boston, where his reverence for Japanese culinary traditions is evident in every course.

The Menu and the Counter

Wa Shin offers an 18-course, seasonally-sourced omakase degustation. The menu shifts with the seasons, drawing on the best local ingredients from New England farmers and fishermen, harmonizing the flavors of Boston and Japan. The experience is built around the Chef’s Hinoki Counter, a bar crafted from sacred Japanese cypress wood. Seated here, guests are up close with the chefs, witnessing the knife work, the plating, and the theater of the meal as it unfolds.

For those seeking a more private experience, the Tsunagari Reserved option offers six rounds of three dishes, designed for intimate group dining. The space itself is designed to evoke the feeling of Chef Zheng’s favorite omakase restaurants in Japan, creating an atmosphere where connection comes naturally.

The Chef’s Philosophy

Omakase translates to “I’ll leave it up to you,” and at Wa Shin, that trust is rewarded with a stream of unconventional courses. The team’s passion for Japanese cuisine is evident in the phenomenal flavor pairings and the care taken with every ingredient. The restaurant’s 20% administrative fee directly supports the kitchen and service team, ensuring that every member is fairly compensated for their craft. Gratuities are neither required nor expected, allowing guests to focus entirely on the meal and the moment.
