The story
At Barcelona Wine Bar in Bridgeport, the spirit of a relaxed Spanish evening comes to life. The restaurant was founded in 1995 by Sasa Mahr-Batuz and Andy Pforzheimer, inspired by Mahr-Batuz’s years living in Spain and Portugal and Pforzheimer’s two decades as a chef in celebrated kitchens across France, California, and New York. They began with a tiny, 38-seat wine bar, aiming to recreate the feel and look of a night in Barcelona—no compromises. The result is a space that feels both sophisticated and welcoming, with décor that evokes Milan, SoHo, or Rio de Janeiro.
The cuisine is clean and rustic, with tapas shaped by Mediterranean, Spanish, and South American influences. Simple, flavor-filled dishes rely on olive oil, lemon, and smoky paprika—nothing fussy, just honest cooking. The wine program is the true centerpiece: nearly 400 wines are featured on the list, with a strong emphasis on the lesser-known regions of Spain and Portugal. This dedication earned Barcelona Wine Bar the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, a recognition that speaks to the depth and care of the selection.
The restaurant’s wine team, led by industry-acclaimed experts like Gretchen Thomas and Emily Nevin-Giannini, regularly hosts wine classes that explore Spain’s essential red wine regions—Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Bierzo, and Priorat. These sessions are designed for anyone curious about what makes a wine taste the way it does, from terroir to technique. The team also champions biodynamic winemaking, sourcing bottles from producers who work in harmony with the land, following the lunar cycle and avoiding mechanization.
Barcelona Wine Bar is a spot where the food, the wine, and the atmosphere all feel connected—rooted in a real love for Spanish culture and a refusal to cut corners. It’s a place that has stayed true to its founders’ original vision: simple, memorable, and grounded in what tastes good.
