The story
In Charlotte's NoDa neighborhood, a former textile mill town, Haberdish brings the region's history to the table. This Southern kitchen and craft cocktail bar serves Carolina-inspired cuisine rooted in the ingredients and techniques of the Appalachian and Piedmont regions. The menu is built around family-style plates—meats, vegetables, and sides served on a jumble of dishes, like a potluck with only your favorites.
The kitchen is obsessive about scratch cooking. Fried chicken is a standout, prepared juicy and flavorful. The smoker works overtime on chicken, rib racks, and even the whites of deviled eggs. They roll and cut their own tater tots, make hot, buttery biscuits from scratch, and produce all sauces in-house except ketchup. Ingredients are sourced with care: NC rainbow trout from Mountain River Farms, grits and cornmeal from Anson Mills, and Snowflake flour from a fourth-generation mill in Henderson, NC. Farm-fresh eggs come from pasture-raised chickens at Harmony Ridge.
The space itself tells a story. A soapstone bar top came from a Virginia quarry, selvedge denim on the seating was produced at Cone Mills in North Carolina, and the tabletops were handcrafted from the building's original rafters. Bar taps are reused spindles from a former mill. The restaurant's name—a blend of "haberdashery" and "dish"—reflects this mission to bring mill town history to life through food and drink.
Haberdish was created by Jeff Tonidandel and Jamie Brown, a duo passionate about hospitality and creating unique places. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended award, a recognition that speaks to the quality and consistency of the experience. It's also been featured in Southern Living, Eater, and Condé Nast Traveler, among many others.
Whether you come for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch, the menu changes with the seasons, incorporating fresh produce from local farms like Fair Share Farms, Urban Gourmet, and Barbee Farms. The craft cocktail program, served from a 1950s soda fountain, offers seasonally crafted apothecary drinks that pair perfectly with the Southern climate and cuisine.
