The story
The founder of Alley 41 grew up in a small alleyway in Sichuan Province, where the local fare left an indelible mark. After moving to the United States, he longed for the authentic food of his childhood and resolved to open a restaurant that would recall those flavors and aromas. He resigned from his job and founded Alley 41 on 41st Street, a secluded side street just off Main Street in Flushing, Queens. The location was chosen for its resemblance to the alley where he grew up.
The restaurant is a tribute to Sichuan cuisine, a style that the founder describes as having “its own gravitational attraction.” It’s a cuisine that feels at home in imperial palaces, long rainy alleyways, and street stalls alike. Alley 41 captures that spirit, and its recognition with a Michelin Bib Gourmand award speaks to the quality and value of the cooking.
The space was designed by Eddy Tao of Eddy Tao + Associates. The “laneway” concept divides the restaurant into three areas: a front lane, an atrium, and a backyard. Distressed carved glass, cement bricks, and black iron create an atmosphere with deep Chinese characteristics, evoking the feeling of an alley in Chengdu. The restaurant is open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and outdoor seating is available for walk-ins.
At the heart of the kitchen is Chef Long, a native of Sichuan Province with more than 40 years of experience in the culinary industry. He served a long apprenticeship under renowned Sichuan master chef Wu Changming. To ensure authenticity, 80% of the ingredients are shipped directly from Sichuan Province. The menu is extensive, featuring classic dishes like mapo tofu, dan-dan noodles, and tea-smoked duck, all prepared with the precision and depth of flavor that define Sichuan cuisine. Despite the high standards, the restaurant remains accessible and affordable, a philosophy that aligns with the Bib Gourmand ethos of good quality at a reasonable price.
For those seeking a taste of Chengdu in Queens, Alley 41 delivers an experience rooted in memory and crafted with skill.
