LanZhou Ramen Doraville: Michelin-Recommended Chinese Hand-Pulled Noodles

The Craft of Hand-Pulled Noodles

LanZhou Ramen, at 5231 Buford Highway in Doraville’s Pine Tree Plaza, is the kind of place where the craft is as compelling as the bowl. Owner Fu Li Zhang has spent decades perfecting the art of Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles—a style that shares its name with the northwestern Chinese city where it originated. From China to New York and now to Atlanta, Zhang’s technique draws diners who watch, transfixed, as he stretches and pulls dough into impossibly fine strands or wide, flat ribbons in seconds.

The restaurant opened in May 2017 and quickly became a local anchor. In 2026, it earned a Michelin Recommended award, a recognition that speaks to the consistency and authenticity of the cooking. Atlanta Magazine has named it one of the city’s best restaurants, and Eater Atlanta called its hand-pulled noodles one of Atlanta’s most iconic dishes.

The Menu: Noodles First

The menu is built around two noodle forms: hand-pulled la mian and knife-sliced dao xiao mian. Guests choose their noodle thickness—regular, thick, thin, thinnest, or flat—and then pick from more than twenty soup and stir-fried preparations. The beef hand-pulled noodle soup (A1) is the classic: a clear, fragrant broth with tender beef and springy noodles. For more depth, the beef stew version (A2) and the ox tail (A5) are standouts. There are also cold noodle options like the spicy chicken or shredded beef (A19) and the oil-poured spicy chicken or beef (A22), a dry noodle dish that lets the heat and the noodle texture shine.

Beyond noodles, the kitchen turns out dumplings, dim sum, chef specialties, appetizers, and cold dishes. The menu is broad but focused—every item is a variation on the core technique of hand-pulling or hand-shaping.

A Welcoming Chinese Dining Room

The atmosphere is unpretentious and family-friendly. Kids and adults alike crowd around the glass window to watch the noodle-making process. The dining room is bright and efficient, with a steady hum of conversation and the clatter of chopsticks. LanZhou Ramen welcomes all ages and backgrounds, and the kitchen accommodates gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian diets with clear menu markers.

This is Chinese cooking at its most elemental and impressive: flour, water, and a master’s hands. The Michelin nod simply confirms what regulars already know—this is one of the most vital noodle shops in the Atlanta area.
