The story
Breakwater Barbecue is the realization of a journey that began in a backyard. Founder Wyatt Fields, an El Granada native, spent years behind bars in San Francisco, learning butchery, taking cooking classes, and running a word-of-mouth catering operation called Native Catering. A simple barbecue class ignited a passion for traditional offset-smoked meats, and countless test cooks later, he opened Breakwater Barbecue in his hometown in 2020.
The restaurant is a leader in American craft barbecue in California, a fact recognized by the Michelin Guide with a Recommended award. Fields is one of only six pitmasters in the state to receive that distinction. The team, including General Manager Jorge Sanchez, brings years of industry experience to a style they call “coastal country”—a blend of Aloha and Southern hospitality, served overlooking Pillar Point Harbor.
The menu is built around smoked meats, platters, burgers, sandwiches (called “sandos”), tacos, salads, and sides. Everything is made from scratch, with an emphasis on local and seasonal produce. The kitchen operates Thursday through Sunday from noon until 8 PM, but the smoked meat market often sells out, so pre-ordering on their website is highly recommended.
Breakwater Barbecue is a destination for honest, handcrafted barbecue that honors tradition while pushing the craft forward. Whether you’re a barbecue purist or a first-time visitor, the welcome is genuine and the food is built to bring people together.
