The story
Overlooking Falls Park from its second-floor perch on South Main Street, Jianna brings a distinctly modern yet welcoming Italian sensibility to downtown Greenville. The restaurant, helmed by chef-owner Michael Kramer, operates with the energy of a classic Italian osteria—a bustling open kitchen, a striking 40-foot bar, and an atmosphere that is both refined and unpretentious.
Kramer’s path to Greenville is a story of mentorship and purpose. The restaurant’s name honors Marc Valiani, a San Francisco chef and early mentor of Kramer’s who passed away from ALS. “Marc was an amazing person,” Kramer recalls. When it came time to name his own place, the choice was immediate. The name Jianna is both a tribute and a promise to carry forward that spirit of creative, generous cooking. Kramer purchased the restaurant outright in 2020, making him the sole proprietor.
The kitchen’s foundation is handcrafted pasta, made fresh daily. Beyond familiar shapes like linguine, the team turns out hand-rolled pastas and extruded noodles such as casarecce and tonarelli. The menu reads as a thoughtful, seasonal exploration of modern Italian cuisine—house-made ricotta crostini with truffle honey, a char-grilled octopus with potato and guanciale, and spaghetti TBG (tomato, basil, garlic, Grana Padano), a dish that has become a signature.
Oysters are a specialty here, shucked to order and served with classic accompaniments. The bar program is equally considered, with a cocktail list that leans into Italian aperitivo culture and a wine selection sourced from small, family-run producers.
Jianna’s approach has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction—a quiet validation of the care that goes into each plate. Whether you come for a full dinner, a weekend lunch, or a late-afternoon Piccolo menu of oysters and pasta, the focus remains the same: simple, delicious food, best shared.
