The story
On Lenox Avenue in Harlem, Barawine is a wine bar and restaurant that brings a contemporary French sensibility to the neighborhood. The space is warm and welcoming, designed for both a relaxed dinner and a lively evening out. The kitchen turns out a menu that feels rooted in bistro classics while staying open to global influences.
The food is straightforward and satisfying. Appetizers include Escargot de Bourgogne with garlic parsley butter and a French Onion Soup with Gruyère. Mains range from a Pan-Seared Branzino Provencal with tomatoes and black olives to a Braised Lamb Shank served with creamy polenta. The Barawine Burger, a blend of beef and lamb, comes with Bordelaise mushroom sauce and fries. For brunch, the menu offers Eggs Benedict, Croque Monsieur, and a Barawine Brunch Sandwich with seared chicken breast and herb aioli. The kitchen also puts out a dedicated vegan Thai rice noodle dish, showing attention to different diets.
The wine program is central to the experience. The list covers wines by the glass and bottle, with a popular bottomless wine and sangria option during brunch. Cocktails and local beers are also available. The bar menu includes a Charcuterie Platter with prosciutto, French ham, chorizo, and Mortadella, as well as a Cheese Platter with Brie, Manchego, and blue cheese.
Barawine is also a live music venue. The restaurant regularly hosts jazz performances, from gypsy jazz quartets to samba-infused evenings, making it a destination for music as well as food. It’s a place that has earned its Michelin Recommended status by being consistent, unpretentious, and genuinely a part of the Harlem dining scene.
