The story

Purdy's Farmer & the Fish – Michelin Recommended Farm-to-Table in North Salem, NY

A Restaurant Rooted in the Land

Purdy’s Farmer & the Fish sits on the 22-acre Purdy Land Trust in North Salem, inside a carefully restored 18th-century house that dates back to 1775. This is not a stage-set rustic; the building has been serving the community for nearly 250 years, and the restaurant continues that tradition with a kitchen that draws directly from the fields outside.

The partnership behind the restaurant is telling: a fishmonger and a chef who studied agriculture at SUNY Cobleskill. Together, they created a place where “local” isn’t a buzzword but a practical reality. More than three-quarters of the vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen are grown on their own farm, steps from the kitchen door. That means a very small carbon footprint—and produce that is genuinely fresh, not just proclaimed.

What’s on the Table

The menu changes with the seasons, but the focus is clear: American cuisine built around high-quality seafood and farm-grown ingredients. The restaurant’s seafood comes from its exclusive supplier, Down East Seafood, ensuring the fish is as thoughtfully sourced as the vegetables. Whether you’re coming for lunch or dinner, the offerings are straightforward and welcoming—nothing fussy, just well-executed farm-to-table cooking.

Diners can choose to sit outdoors in the garden or on the front porch, weather permitting, or inside the cozy, historic dining room. The atmosphere is relaxed and community-oriented, the kind of place where you can linger over a meal without pretense.

A Michelin-Recommended Experience

Purdy’s Farmer & the Fish earned a Michelin Recommendation in 2026, a recognition that aligns naturally with the restaurant’s core philosophy: honest ingredients, careful preparation, and a genuine connection to the land. The Michelin inspectors noted the quality of the sourcing and the consistency of the kitchen—a testament to the daily work of the team.

More Than a Restaurant

Adjacent to the dining room is the Farm Shop, open seven days a week from noon to 7 pm. It stocks fresh produce from the farm, whole fish from Down East Seafood, prepared dishes, local meats, cheeses, dairy, house-baked goods, coffee, and specialty items. You can also order online for pickup. The restaurant offers catering, and the farm itself runs a CSA program.

If you’re in Heritage Hills or North Salem, Purdy’s Farmer & the Fish is a place where the food is grown, caught, and cooked with care—and recognized by Michelin for doing exactly that.
