The story
Paradisaea, the Michelin-recommended restaurant in La Jolla's historic Bird Rock neighborhood, is the realization of a long-held dream by local owners. When the iconic William Kesling "Piano Building" became available, they transformed the landmark structure with the help of B&R Architects and interior design firm Georgis & Mirgorodsky. The result is a space that reflects their global travels while staying rooted in the local community—a beautiful, comfortable setting where excellent food is served by people who care.
Paradisaea's contemporary Californian cuisine is built on careful technique and bold flavors. Begin with the "Lesser" section, where you can select four house-cured meats and four house-cured cheeses for a charcuterie board, or choose from assorted crudo preparations like sashimi, oysters, or tataki. The seared mushrooms arrive with dry-aged bacon and local arugula, while the hand-cut steak tartare is paired with a 63° yolk and crispy yukon potato.
For "Greater" plates, the Mangalitza Secreto features forbidden rice and kabocha, and the house pappardelle is tossed with roasted shallot tomato sauce and grilled mushroom. The en papillote preparation—fresh local fish cooked in parchment with ancient grains and local vegetables—is dressed tableside with buerre blanc. Among the "Superior" offerings, the Paradisaea Burger stands out with caramelized poblano-onion rajas and robiola bosina on a house-baked brioche bun, and the 75 dry-aged Snake River Farms ribeye is served with kennebec hash and black pepper jus.
The drink menu is equally considered, with signatures like the Casablanca (fig-infused gin, grilled lemon, sesame orgeat) and the Oaxacan Negroni (mezcal, coconut-washed Campari, cacao). Whether you're drawn to a classic Mai Tai or a creative spin like the Trapani with blood orange gin and jasmine, the bar program complements the kitchen's ambition.
Happy hour runs Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 6 PM, with half-off cocktails and a special walk-in menu. Paradisaea also offers outdoor seating, a private room, and takeaway service.
