The story
Casanova sits on 5th Avenue in a cottage that once belonged to Aunt Fairy Bird, Charlie Chaplin’s personal cook. The Georis family purchased the tiny shack in the 1970s and remodeled it with traditional Belgian architecture, preserving the quaint charm that defines Carmel-by-the-Sea. Today, that same reverence for history and authenticity runs through everything they do.
Casanova’s kitchen focuses on contemporary and rustic cuisine, rooted in French-Italian traditions and infused with Californian ingredients. The menu changes with the seasons, drawing from local organic farms and fisheries. Dishes range from a warm delicata and beet salad with sheep cheese to Gnocchi Casanova au gratin, and from a richly braised beef cannelloni with truffle to fresh Dover sole meunière with brown butter and lemon. The philosophy is simple: provide the best quality ingredients, support local producers, and let the flavors speak.
The restaurant’s commitment to craft has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a nod to its consistent, honest cooking and welcoming atmosphere. Wine lovers will appreciate an interesting wine list that complements the food, and those who prefer dining al fresco can enjoy the outdoor seating.
Casanova is more than a restaurant – it’s a family tradition that extends into the community. For over twenty years, the staff have mentored local children through hands-on cooking classes and demonstrations in school organic gardens. That sense of purpose, combined with a setting that holds a piece of local history, makes every meal feel connected to something larger.
