The story

Paprika Café in Monterey: Michelin-Recommended Greek & Mediterranean Fare

A Monterey Mediterranean Mainstay

Paprika Café first opened its doors in 1994 as Tabouli Café. Chef and owner Christophe Hamade has since grown the tiny Lighthouse Avenue spot into a local favorite, one that draws both regulars and visitors headed to the nearby Monterey Bay Aquarium. The restaurant is family-run, and Hamade’s warmth and recommendations – often delivered from his small back kitchen – are part of its charm.

What to Expect

Currently, Paprika Café operates with window service only. Orders are placed at the window, and outdoor seating is available on the patio. There is no indoor dining at this time. The menu is built around Mediterranean staples, with options for both vegetarians and meat-eaters. The vegetarian lineup features falafel, tabouli, hummus, spanakopita, and dolmas, all served as plates, wrapped in warm pita, or as salads. Vegan and gluten-free variations are available.

For those who want meat, the non-vegetarian menu includes grilled chicken, lamb, gyro meat, and kafta, paired with rice and a side of hummus. Customer favorites include the Garlic Chicken Combo and the Falafel Combo, along with the Garlic Chicken Pita Wrap.

One unusual standout is the vegan baklava – crispy layers of phyllo, syrup, and nuts, available in flavors like cashew, pistachio, and walnut. The drink menu is compact but satisfying, with organic lemonade (including a spicy version), Turkish coffee, and a Turkish coffee-and-baklava combo.

Recognition and Reputation

Paprika Café earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. The Michelin guide notes it as “a perfect sojourn before or after a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium,” praising the “delectable and affordable Mediterranean food and friendly service.” It is also a Yelp and Tripadvisor favorite. For larger groups, the café offers off-site catering.

This is straightforward, well-executed Greek and Mediterranean cooking from a chef-owner who clearly cares about quality and hospitality – a reliable stop in downtown Monterey.
