The story
In the East Village, Bungalow is the realization of a deeply personal vision from Michelin-starred Chef Vikas Khanna and proprietor Jimmy Rizvi. The restaurant, which earned a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide for its good quality, good value cooking, offers a menu that travels across 28 states of India. It is a place where every dish tells the story of the country, its regions, and its people.
Chef Khanna, born in Amritsar and trained across the world, draws from a lifetime of devotion to Indian cooking. His work at Bungalow is rooted in tradition, elevated by craft. The team also includes General Manager Sameer Bhatt, whose background includes Eleven Madison Park and Le Pavillon, and Creative Director Shaila Rizvi, who has shaped the restaurant's visual identity around the textures and flavors of Independence-era India.
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with pale pink walls, colorful murals, and a bar with carved panels setting the tone. The menu is a celebration of regional specialties, from the Spice Roasted Pineapple with coconut and curry leaves to the Smoked Sweet Potato Chaat with green mango sauce. Other standout dishes include the Anarkali Chicken with pomegranate-chili, the Alleppey Shrimp Curry with coconut and tamarind, and the Ammi's Lamb Chops with cashew butter and poppy seed. Desserts like the Mango Three Way—homemade mango ice cream with raspberry coulis—offer a sweet finish.
Bungalow is not just a restaurant; it is an invitation to experience the rich history, culture, and exceptional cuisine of India. As the Michelin Guide notes, it is a warm and welcoming dining room where every bite is a celebration. The restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday, offering a journey that feels both elevated and genuinely warm.
