The story

Cafe Mado, Brooklyn: Michelin-Recommended American Contemporary in Prospect Heights

A Prospect Heights Neighborhood Restaurant

Cafe Mado occupies the space on Washington Avenue that once housed Oxalis, steps from the Brooklyn Museum, the Botanic Garden, and Prospect Park. It’s the kind of place that feels both refined and genuinely relaxed — a restaurant that belongs to the block, not above it. The kitchen is inspired by classic French hospitality, filtered through a distinctly New York energy: seasonal, ingredient-driven, and unfussy.

Seasonal Cooking with Live Fire

The menu changes with the seasons, built around thoughtful sourcing. You’ll find fresh seafood, handmade pastas, vegetable-forward dishes, and cooking over live fire. The brunch service on weekends draws the museum crowd; dinner during the week pulls in neighbors and industry regulars alike. Every Monday evening, Cafe Mado offers a steak dinner built around prime-quality beef, two seasonal starters, and a spread of seasonal sides for $85 per person — a ritual that has become a favorite for its generosity and value.

Wine and Hospitality

The wine list focuses on small growers and classic regions across France, Spain, and the Mediterranean, with a strong emphasis on Jura, Burgundy, and Loire bottles that reflect the kitchen’s sensibility. The cocktail and non-alcoholic programs follow the same seasonal logic. The room is designed to work for a glass at the bar as easily as a full dinner with friends.

Recognition and Roots

Cafe Mado earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a nod to the consistent quality of its American Contemporary cuisine and the warmth of its service. It is part of the Redwood Hospitality group — which also operates the Michelin-starred Oxalis, Place des Fêtes, and Golden Ratio — but stands on its own as a neighborhood spot. The restaurant is named for Marie Louise “Madame Mado” Point, who upheld the legacy of La Pyramide in Vienne long after her husband’s passing. Cafe Mado sees its own story as a collective narrative, enriched by everyone who works within its walls.
