The story
Inspired by the great Viennese cafés that were centers of intellectual and artistic life at the turn of the 20th century, Cafe Sabarsky brings a slice of Old World elegance to New York City. Located within the Neue Galerie on Museum Mile, the café is named for the museum’s co-founder, Serge Sabarsky.
The atmosphere is meticulously crafted, outfitted with period objects including lighting fixtures by Josef Hoffmann, furniture by Adolf Loos, and banquettes upholstered with a 1912 Otto Wagner fabric. A Bösendorfer grand piano anchors one corner, used for cabaret, chamber, and classical music performances.
Under the direction of Executive Chef Christopher Engel, the kitchen offers refined Austrian cuisine. The menu draws from the traditions of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, with dishes like Organic Chicken Paprikash with Spätzle and Viennese Beef Goulash. The café also offers a takeaway service featuring whole cakes and “Servings For Two” meal kits—such as Roasted Bratwurst with Riesling Sauerkraut and Bavarian Weisswurst with Warm Pretzel—allowing guests to enjoy the restaurant’s celebrated cooking at home.
The café’s quality has earned it a Michelin recommendation, a recognition that reflects its consistent execution of classic Austrian dishes in a setting that feels both timeless and intimate. Whether for a morning coffee and pastry, a leisurely lunch, or a formal dinner, Cafe Sabarsky offers a dining experience that honors the cultural richness of Vienna.
