The story
Chef Arturo Leonar was born and raised in Mexico City. He moved to New York as a young man, learning the restaurant trade from the ground up. His natural affinity for cooking propelled him through kitchens like Arizona 206, where he worked under Miles Angelo, and later alongside David Walzog at Strip House. After stints with Alex Garcia at Calle Ocho and James Botsacos at Park Avalon, Leonar decided to open his own place—a return to the traditional Mexican cuisine of his childhood.
In 2007, he opened the first Chavela’s on Classon Avenue in Brooklyn. Local diners quickly embraced the authentic flavors and warm welcome. Leonar and his wife Desiree worked every aspect of the small restaurant, which became a neighborhood mainstay. As demand grew, they moved to a larger corner space at Franklin and Sterling Place in 2011. There, Chavela’s became a pioneer on a street that would soon fill with creative businesses.
The atmosphere is deliberately informal and lively. Colorful décor transports guests off Brooklyn’s sidewalks into what feels like the heart of Mexico. Regulars describe the scene as a party—full of music, great food, and laughter. The team welcomes everyone like family, and the space can get crowded, but the energy only adds to the charm.
Chavela’s has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, a recognition of its good quality, good value cooking. The menu stays true to Leonar’s heritage, offering traditional Mexican dishes that reflect the flavors he grew up with. Alongside the food, the bar features an extensive selection of tequilas and mezcals, each chosen for craftsmanship and authenticity. Whether you come for brunch, lunch, or dinner, the experience is consistently genuine.
Open seven days a week from 11 AM to 11 PM, Chavela’s remains a beloved anchor in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood—a place where authentic Mexican cuisine and a welcoming spirit meet.
