The story
Dhamaka, part of the Unapologetic Foods group, brings the bold, provincial cooking of India to the Lower East Side. Housed inside Essex Market, the restaurant dives deep into dishes rarely seen outside of Indian homes and roadside stalls—intensely spiced, unfiltered, and rooted in memory. The name itself means “explosion,” and the cooking delivers on that promise.
The menu pays tribute to regional specialties that have long been overlooked. Start with the Ajwaini Prawn, jumbo shrimp seasoned with carrom seeds and yellow chili, or the Beef Pepper Fry featuring Wagyu flank with curry leaves and Tellicherry pepper. For the adventurous, the limited-availability Gurda Kapoora—goat kidney and testicles cooked with tomato and served with pao—is a true taste of old-school Indian street food.
Among the rice dishes, the Goat Neck Biryani (saffron, aged basmati) and Short Rib Pulao (bone marrow, cilantro) are standout performances. Mains like Dhungar Gosht, a smoked goat curry with Mathania chili, and Makai Lamb, a lamb shank braised with corn and white pepper, showcase the kitchen’s command of slow-cooked, layered flavors.
Dhamaka earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026 for its good-quality, good-value cooking. It was also named the #1 restaurant of 2021 by both The New York Times and Esquire, and landed on Eater National’s list of the 11 Best New Restaurants in America. The dining room at Essex Market is unfussy and energetic, with a mural by artist Sean Maze and an open kitchen that lets the aromas of ghee, chili, and smoked meat fill the space.
Dinner is served nightly, with weekend brunch also available. Reservations are taken via SevenRooms for parties of six or fewer; larger groups are directed to the private dining page. Dhamaka’s approach to Indian cooking is unapologetic in the best sense—direct, flavorful, and deeply regional.
