The story

Le Coucou, New York City – Chef Daniel Rose's Refined French Cuisine in SoHo

A Parisian Table in Lower Manhattan

Chef Daniel Rose and restaurateur Stephen Starr set out to prove something with Le Coucou: that authentic, refined French cuisine can find its footing in New York just as naturally as it does in Paris. On Lafayette Street in SoHo, in a room designed by Roman and Williams, they have done exactly that. The space blends classic European ambiance with modern sensibility — the kind of setting where the food and the surroundings feel genuinely matched to each other.

The restaurant holds a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, a recognition that speaks directly to the depth and seriousness of its cellar. The wine list spans grower Champagnes, Burgundy, Loire, and beyond — a program that rewards curiosity as much as familiarity.

Daniel Rose's Kitchen

Rose's approach is grounded in classical French technique, applied with a lightness that keeps the cooking from feeling museum-bound. Dishes are built around seasonal ingredients and the kind of comfort that comes from getting fundamentals exactly right.

Among the signatures: the Quenelle de brochet — a delicate pike mousse finished with lobster sauce or beurre blanc, with optional caviar — stands as one of the more precise expressions of old-school French craft in the city. Tout le lapin (all of the rabbit) reflects Rose's affection for whole-animal cooking and honest, direct flavors. The Vol-au-vent Coucou — sweetbreads, lobster, mushroom, and vermouth cream inside a pâte feuilletée shell — is the kind of dish that takes real conviction to put on a menu in 2025.

Starters range from a hand-chopped Tartare de bœuf with caviar to a Consommé à l'alsacienne made with gewürztraminer and sauerkraut dumplings — a quiet nod to the Alsatian pantry that shows how specific Rose's references are. On the fish side, Filet de sole meunière arrives in golden butter with spinach, offered in a traditional version or with oysters.

Lunch, Dinner, and the Prix Fixe

Le Coucou serves both lunch and dinner, with structured prix fixe options alongside à la carte. Lunch runs two or three courses, or the full "A Very Coucou Lunch" experience. Dinner offers a similar range, including a four-course group menu for parties of seven to ten — well suited to the private dining the restaurant accommodates. The kitchen is able to work around most dietary requirements, including gluten intolerance.

The cocktail program leans into French spirits — Armagnac, rhum agricole, cognac — alongside thoughtfully constructed non-alcoholic options, so the aperitif ritual feels intact regardless of what you're drinking.
