The story
On a corner of Greenpoint Avenue in Brooklyn, Oxomoco has established itself as a destination for contemporary Mexican cooking that rewards attention. The restaurant, led by owner and Executive Chef Justin Bazdarich alongside owner Chris Walton, Chef de Cuisine Maria Barriga, and Beverage Director Marino Perez, offers a menu that moves from snacks to substantial plates with confidence and clarity.
The kitchen’s strength lies in its tostadas and tacos. A Soya Marinated Tuna Tostada arrives with avocado, salsa macha, and radish; the Beef Tartare Tostada adds chapulines and egg yolk jam. Tacos range from maitake with herbs ricotta and morita-ancho salsa to suadero—beef cheeks with roasted jalapeño and guacachile. Larger plates include a Half Roasted Chicken with chintesle and salsa pasilla, Pork Carnitas with escabeche veggies and chicharron crunch, and an American Wagyu Bavette with mole coloradito.
The drinks program is equally considered. A list of cocktails—from a Classic Margarita to the Keken Poblano, a carnitas-washed whiskey with mezcal and pepitas—sits alongside a wine list that reaches into Mexico, Spain, France, and California. A selection of agave spirits and zero-proof options rounds things out.
Brunch is served seven days a week, with chilaquiles, a Gloria Pancake with cajeta pecan toffee, and lamb barbacoa tacos among the offerings. Dinner runs nightly from 5:00 to 10:00 PM.
Oxomoco holds a Michelin star, a recognition that speaks to the precision and depth of its cooking. The restaurant’s approach to Mexican cuisine is both rooted and inventive—familiar forms treated with a rigor that makes each dish worth ordering on its own terms.
