Persepolis: A Taste of Persian Tradition on the Upper East Side

For more than three decades, Persepolis has been a steadfast presence on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, offering a genuine taste of Persian cuisine. Founded by Kazem Bayati, a former goalkeeper for Iran’s Persepolis FC, the restaurant was built on a foundation of discipline and pride, aiming to share the flavors and warmth of Persian culture with New York City. This long-standing dedication to authenticity and hospitality has not gone unnoticed; Persepolis is honored to be selected for the Michelin Guide, a recognition that underscores its commitment to an unforgettable dining experience.

The menu is a deep exploration of what the restaurant calls the "world's oldest cuisine." It begins with a robust selection of appetizers that highlight the complexity of Persian cooking. Start with the creamy, tangy Kashke Bademjan—baked eggplant purée with Persian sour cheese and walnuts—or the herbaceous Kuku Sabzi, a Persian spinach pie. The array of homemade yogurt dips, including a distinct yogurt and beets with walnuts and raisins, showcases the kitchen’s skill with balance and texture.

Entrées are anchored by an extensive lineup of kebabs, each marinated with care. The Saffron Chicken is a classic, while the tender Lamb Shank is braised in herbs until falling apart. For a true taste of the house style, the Soltani platter pairs a ground beef Koobideh kebab with either a filet mignon or lamb kebab. The stews, or khoresht, are equally compelling: the pomegranate-and-walnut Fesenjoon and the herb-heavy Ghormeh Sabzi are rich, slow-cooked preparations that define the cuisine. All main courses are served with a choice of steamed basmati rice or salad, with fragrant options like Polo Baghali (with dill and fava beans) or Polo Albalo (with sour cherries) available for a small supplement.

At Persepolis, the spirit of hospitality is as central as the food. Whether you’re stopping in for a weekday lunch special or a full dinner, the restaurant remains a dedicated home for Persian culture and memory in New York City.
