The story
Since 1887, Peter Luger Steak House has stood at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn, earning its reputation as New York’s top steakhouse. What began as “Carl Luger’s Café, Billiards and Bowling Alley” quickly became a neighborhood fixture in predominantly German Williamsburg. When the restaurant fell into disrepair after Peter Luger’s death, Sol Forman—a regular customer who ran a manufacturing business across the street—bought it at auction in 1950 for the price of the real estate. He was the only bidder.
Under the Forman family’s management, the restaurant was restored to its former glory and has remained on top ever since. The critical job of selecting the meat fell to Sol’s wife, Marsha Forman, who spent two years learning from a retired USDA grader. Today, family members still personally visit the wholesale markets to inspect short loins, ensuring only the finest USDA Prime beef is dry-aged on site. This dedication to quality has earned Peter Luger a Michelin Recommended distinction, solidifying its place among American classics.
The menu focuses on the steakhouse experience. The star is the USDA Prime beef—family selected and dry-aged in the restaurant’s own drying box—served as Steak for Two, Three, or Four, alongside a single steak and a Rib Steak option. Appetizers include Luger’s Sizzling Bacon, extra thick by the slice, and Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail. Sides like Creamed Spinach and Luger’s Special German Fried Potatoes accompany the main event, and desserts—from Cheesecake to the “Holy Cow” Hot Fudge Sundae—are served with homemade “Schlag” (whipped cream).
