The story
Tamarind Tribeca is the refined reincarnation of the original Tamarind, a Michelin-starred restaurant that once stood in Manhattan’s Flatiron district. Now located at 99 Hudson Street, the restaurant continues its mission under owner Avtar Walia: to present Indian cuisine in its purest form, with a contemporary touch. The move to Tribeca is intentional—a neighborhood that has long been a melting pot of the old and new. Here, Tamarind follows that tradition, offering classical Indian flavors with the sensibility of 21st-century New York.
Mr. Walia’s story begins in Punjab, India. After arriving in the United States three decades ago, he worked as a warehouse manager for Gucci and as a captain at the city’s Tandoor restaurant before managing the acclaimed Akbar on Park Avenue. His first major success as a co-owner was Dawat, a restaurant that helped bring Indian food to the forefront of New York’s culinary scene. Fifteen years later, he opened the original Tamarind as its sole proprietor, earning a Michelin star. Now, with Tamarind Tribeca, he has assembled a team of highly skilled chefs who represent the cultural and culinary diversity of India, aiming to elevate the perception of Indian fine dining.
Designed by architect Wid Chapman, the two-story restaurant seats 175 guests and is flooded with natural light from its perimeter windows. By night, the mood shifts, with soft, ambient light from crafted chandeliers. The interiors are resplendent, with tables on the street side offering elevated views of the New York cityscape. The restaurant also features a world-class wine selection, with expert sommeliers on hand to guide pairings, and a cocktail program that pushes boundaries with innovative, flavorful libations. The Michelin Guide has noted the soaring interiors as the perfect setting for the restaurant’s grandeur, and the restaurant continues to hold a Michelin recommendation.
