The story
In the picturesque town of Pound Ridge, New York, Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten has created a casually elegant dining destination. Housed in a building originally constructed in 1833 as a residence and later serving as an inn, the restaurant has been painstakingly renovated to preserve its historic character. Four working fireplaces remain, and the interior—designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen—blends modern touches like zinc and marble with reclaimed wood and stone. The lighting, conceived by Hervé Descottes, uses paper shades and Edison fixtures to create a warm, inviting glow.
The culinary philosophy here is rooted in the seasons. Jean-Georges cultivates a truly seasonal, farm-to-table cuisine, sourcing ingredients from the Hudson Valley and New England whenever possible. This down-to-earth approach to American contemporary cooking makes the restaurant a convivial, family-friendly spot frequented by both neighbors and tourists. The dinner menu reflects this ethos, offering dishes meant to share—crispy salmon sushi with chipotle mayonnaise and soy glaze, or a wood-roasted whole artichoke with garlic, parsley, and lemon. Appetizers include tuna tartare with avocado, radish, and ginger soy marinade, and a spring pea soup with carrots, chilies, and mint. Pizzas and pastas range from a simple tomato, mozzarella, and basil pizza to black truffle and fontina cheese pizza, and campanelle pasta with roasted asparagus and basil pistachio pesto. Mains feature steamed black sea bass with wild mushrooms, ginger, and scallion, a parmesan-crusted organic chicken with artichoke and lemon basil sauce, and a 28-day dry-aged prime ribeye for two, served with creamed spinach and crunchy potatoes with Fresno chili dressing.
The restaurant’s recognition by the Michelin guide, earning a Recommended distinction, speaks to the consistent quality of the experience. With two dining rooms, two full bars, and a candlelit wine cellar for private dining, the inn is equipped to accommodate everything from intimate dinners to full-scale weddings. It is a place where the food is straightforward, the setting is warm, and the welcome is genuine.
