The story
Snail Bar is a natural wine bar and bottle shop on Shattuck Avenue in Oakland’s Temescal district. It is a very small place—an indoor counter and a patio parklet accommodate walk-in guests, while reservations for full-service evenings are available Friday through Monday. The space is intimate, and the team asks for notice if you are running more than fifteen minutes late; your table will otherwise go to someone on the waitlist.
The food menu is small and seasonally focused, changing from week to week. It is available in full whether you are seated at the counter, on the patio, or at a reserved table. Snail Bar also operates as a bottle shop, so you can take a piece of the wine list home. On Thursdays in November, the bar hosts a special project called Left On Madeline, adding another layer to the experience.
Snail Bar’s combination of good-quality, good-value cooking earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026. The award reflects what the bar does best: thoughtful, ingredient-driven Californian and contemporary cuisine served without pretension in a setting that feels genuinely welcoming. It is the kind of place where the menu changes with the market and the wine list is as considered as the food.
