Bistro Romano Philadelphia – Italian Dining in a Historic Society Hill Setting

An Italian Mainstay on Lombard Street

For 38 years, Bistro Romano has been a fixture on Lombard Street in Philadelphia’s historic Society Hill. Housed inside an 18th-century granary, the restaurant’s candlelit dining rooms, exposed stone walls, and old-world charm create a setting that feels both intimate and enduring.

The Food: Italian Roots, Seasonal Execution

The kitchen focuses on Italian and Mediterranean cooking, with an emphasis on fresh seafood and house-made pastas. Signature dishes include an award-winning Caesar salad, lobster ravioli in sherry cream, and black truffle gnocchi with prosciutto cotto. The menu changes regularly to reflect seasonal ingredients, but staples like fettuccine bolognese and grilled branzino remain. Pastas and desserts are made in-house daily.

For those who want the chef’s full range, the five-course Tasting Menu is available for full-table participation. It’s a curated progression through antipasti, primi, secondo, and dolce.

Wine Program and Recognition

Bistro Romano’s wine list has earned the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, a reflection of its thoughtful selection and depth. The Bistro Bar offers wines by the glass, flights, craft cocktails, and zero-proof options. On Fridays and Saturdays, live piano music fills the bar. Wednesday and Thursday evenings feature the Pasta e Vino special: one curated pasta and a glass of house wine for $20.

The Wine Cellar Experience

Below the main dining room, a private wine cellar seats two to four guests for a dedicated five-course tasting menu. The table is set with rose petals and candles, and the meal ends with limoncello. It’s a popular choice for date nights, proposals, and anniversaries. Reservations are required.

Private Dining and Events

The second-floor 120 Wine Room accommodates private parties, rehearsal dinners, and corporate meetings, with AV and Wi-Fi available. The restaurant also offers catering, takeout, and delivery through its own Bistro To Go service.

Bistro Romano has been recognized by Best of Philly, OpenTable’s Most Romantic Restaurant, and Conde Nast Traveler’s Top 100 Tables. After nearly four decades, it remains a steady presence in Philadelphia’s dining landscape.
