The story
Altius means “higher” in Latin, and the name captures both the restaurant’s perch atop Pittsburgh’s Mt. Washington and its ambition. Here, every detail is seen as an opportunity to create a sublime experience. The philosophy is simple: fresh, honest ingredients treated with care. The kitchen uses sustainable, organic, and local products whenever possible, letting the quality of each component speak for itself.
Executive Chef and partner Jessica Bauer leads the culinary team. A Pittsburgh native, she trained at the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute and refined her skills at the four-star, five-diamond Boca Raton Resort & Club and under Chef Gregory Waters. Her approach to contemporary American cuisine is refined and modern, built on fundamental techniques and a deep respect for ingredients. Chef de Cuisine Michael Guadagnolo, trained in traditional French cuisine, brings a minimalist style and a passion for organic, garden-fresh produce.
Altius has quickly become one of Pittsburgh’s premier fine dining destinations. It holds a AAA Four Diamond rating and earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2023 — a testament to its thoughtfully curated wine program. The restaurant’s modern surroundings and genuine hospitality make every visit feel considered, from the first glance at the city skyline to the last bite of a seasonal dish. Whether you come for the view or the food, you’ll find a place where elevated American cuisine is more than a promise.
