The story
Perched 40 feet above the eastern bank of the Hudson River, Shadows on the Hudson offers American cuisine with a view that defines the experience. In the heart of Poughkeepsie, the restaurant commands panoramic sightlines of the Mid-Hudson Bridge to the north and the river stretching south. It is a setting that has earned the restaurant a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, a recognition that speaks directly to the care invested in its beverage program.
Under the guidance of Wine Director Enrique Durán, the restaurant has built a wine list of over 400 selections. A Napa Wine System, using argon gas to preserve opened bottles, allows guests to order fine wines by the glass from the reserve list. The temperature-controlled wine cellar, visible from the front desk, houses this collection and reflects the team’s dedication to offering breadth across winegrowing regions and depth from top producers.
The space itself was reimagined in a 2017 renovation. A four-sided, floor-to-ceiling glass fireplace now anchors the center of the restaurant, separating the main dining room from a redesigned lounge. The private dining room features sliding barn doors, a hand-laid red-brick fireplace, and walnut paneling. A semi-private Sunset Room remains available for larger events, with sound-blocking curtains for a more intimate feel.
When weather allows, the panoramic glass wall on the outdoor terrace is removed, creating an al-fresco dining space perched above the water. The riverside bar offers the same drink specials and views, and boaters can dock at Shadows Marina for direct access to the restaurant.
Executive Chef Nick Brower developed a menu that pairs with the wine program, featuring USDA prime beef and fresh seafood. The restaurant also serves Sunday brunch and hosts a weekly Wine Wednesday event.
