The story
At Fogo de Chão on Sixth Avenue, the art of churrasco is alive and well. This Brazilian steakhouse, part of a celebrated international family, brings the culinary traditions of Rio Grande do Sul to downtown San Diego. Gaucho chefs circulate the dining room with skewers of fire-roasted meats, carving Picanha, Fraldinha, and other signature cuts directly onto your plate.
The story begins in the mountainous countryside of southern Brazil, where the founding brothers grew up on a family farm. They learned to cook in the churrasco style—slow-roasting meats over open flames—before formal training in Rio and São Paulo led to the first Fogo de Chão restaurant in Porto Alegre. That wood-built restaurant, rooted in an obsessive dedication to quality, quickly gained a reputation among politicians, businessmen, and celebrities. The San Diego location is part of an expansion that began in the United States in 1997, bringing that same fire and heritage to a new audience.
The dining experience here is built around the full churrasco experience. Beyond the continuous service of grilled meats, the Market Table offers a fresh and vibrant spread of seasonal vegetables, salads, and imported cheeses. Bar Fogo adds a layer of Brazilian-inspired small plates, award-winning wines, and cocktails—including the classic Caipirinha. The restaurant’s wine program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2014, a recognition that speaks to the care taken in pairing bottles with the robust, smoky flavors of the grill.
The atmosphere is energetic and welcoming, designed for both intimate dinners and large gatherings. With outdoor seating, table service, and options for private parties and catering, Fogo de Chão adapts to the occasion. The team’s commitment to the tradition of churrasco—the culinary art of cooking over fire—remains the constant, whether you are here for lunch, dinner, or a special event.
