The story
At Sushi Tadokoro, the focus is on the quiet art of traditional Edo-mae sushi. In an intimate space on San Diego Avenue, Chef Takeaki Tadokoro crafts each piece with a precision honed over decades. Born in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1971, Chef Tadokoro completed two years of intensive sushi training in Japan before moving to the U.S. in 2000. He spent twelve years refining his skills in San Diego before opening his own restaurant in 2012, realizing a vision of authentic Japanese cuisine deeply rooted in tradition.
The kitchen selects premium local and seasonal ingredients from around the world, letting the quality of the fish and the seasoned rice speak for themselves. Every piece is thoughtfully crafted to highlight the textures and flavors that define traditional Japanese sushi. The result is a meal that feels both deliberate and effortless.
Sushi Tadokoro earned a Michelin One Star from 2021 to 2023, and the restaurant remains a Michelin Recommended destination for 2026. The recognition reflects a kitchen that values substance over spectacle. The dining room is cozy and intimate, with counter seating that lets guests watch the chef at work—a setting that rewards those who appreciate the quiet focus of a master at his craft.
