The story

A16, San Francisco – Italian Pizza and Southern Italian Cuisine

A16 San Francisco

Since 2004, A16 on Chestnut Street has been a corner of Southern Italy in the San Francisco Bay Area. The restaurant takes its name from the Italian Autostrada dei Due Mari (Motorway of the Two Seas), which connects Puglia, land of burrata, to Campania, heart of pizza country. This connection flavors everything A16 does.

The kitchen follows Vera Pizza Napoletana (V.P.N.) standards, making each pizza with the same techniques used in Naples. The results are thin, blistered crusts topped with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, and local ingredients like Jimmy Nardello peppers or California basil. The Margherita, Arrabbiata, and Salsiccia are perennial favorites, but the menu shifts with the seasons.

Beyond pizza, the antipasti and primi showcase the same Southern Italian-California sensibility. A fennel salad with Cara Cara oranges and mint, braised meatballs in white wine, and squid ink tonnarelli with Dungeness crab all appear regularly. The secondi – Mary’s Half Chicken Diavola or a Flannery ribeye Genovese – come with a choice of contorno. House-made gelato and a tiramisù with Mr. Espresso finish the meal.

A Wine Club and a Community Feel

A16’s wine list is built on longtime relationships with Italian producers. The A16 Club del Vino delivers curated bottles monthly, reflecting the same care that goes into the dining room list. The space itself is warm and unpretentious, with local ceramics and murals that reinforce the restaurant’s ties to Bay Area artisans.

The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognizes A16’s consistent quality and value – a fitting nod to a restaurant that has been delivering honest, well-crafted Italian food for two decades. A16 also has outposts in Oakland, Napa, and the Ferry Building, but the original Chestnut Street location remains the flagship.
