The story

Benu – San Francisco's Three-Star Destination Ranked Among the World's 50 Best

A Landmark of Fine Dining in San Francisco

Nestled on Hawthorne Street in San Francisco's SoMa district, Benu stands as one of the most celebrated restaurants in the world. Under the visionary leadership of Chef Corey Lee — formerly head chef at The French Laundry — Benu has redefined what fine dining means on the West Coast, earning a place among the world's most prestigious culinary destinations.

A Cuisine Born from Two Worlds

Benu's cuisine is a deeply personal and meticulously crafted expression of Chef Lee's Korean heritage filtered through classical French technique. Every dish tells a story of cultural dialogue, transforming familiar ingredients and traditional references into something entirely unexpected. The tasting menu — Benu's sole offering — unfolds as a series of compositions that are as intellectually compelling as they are delicious, drawing on Korean, Chinese, and broader East Asian culinary traditions woven seamlessly into a contemporary fine dining framework.

Signature creations such as the thousand-year-old quail egg and the abalone have become iconic in the San Francisco dining scene, reflecting Benu's commitment to precision, depth, and a sense of quiet wonder.

World Recognition and Awards

Benu's global standing is beyond question. The restaurant has appeared on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list multiple times, ranking #28 in 2021 and #47 in 2019 — a testament to the consistency and ambition that define every service. These accolades place Benu firmly among a rarified group of restaurants shaping the future of global gastronomy.

An Atmosphere of Serene Elegance

The dining room at Benu is a study in restraint and beauty. Clean lines, warm lighting, and considered spacing between tables create an atmosphere of hushed intimacy — the perfect setting in which to give each course the full attention it deserves. A private room is also available, offering an exclusive space for special occasions or intimate gatherings.

At Benu, every detail — from the ceramics on the table to the final petit four — reflects a single-minded dedication to excellence.

A native of South Korea who moved to the United States as a young child, chef Lee is a disciple of Thomas Keller, whose kitchens he oversaw for nine years. At Benu, Lee’s technique and precision is apparent in everything from the placement of the water glass on the table to the perfectly lacquered skin of barbecued quail. The meal is like a beautiful ballet, with dishes timed to perfection and waitstaff moving seamlessly through the restaurant in a choreographed dance. The effect is soothing and gives you the chance to relax and revel in the decadence of the dishes. The Benu team keeps tabs on all patrons. If it’s your first time at the restaurant, you’ll be treated to more than 12 courses of Lee’s greatest hits — including mussels stuffed with glass noodles and fine vegetables, and chicken wing filled with abalone — while returning diners will enjoy new items that are just as delightful.Unlike some restaurants that have a see-and-be-seen type of atmosphere, Benu is wonderfully private. With its sophisticated, exclusive and posh vibe, the venue feels more like an intimate dining room in a modern art museum.Lee’s cuisine has a strong Asian influence, and he also focuses on sourcing high-quality ingredients. This is also reflected in his plating — each dish has a unique serving platter (many custom-made by a Korean artisan), from the linen napkin that wraps warm bread to the smooth black circular stone that showcases a ground-acorn quesadilla filled with Iberico ham and black truffle.
