The story

El Buen Comer: Authentic Mexican Guisados in San Francisco | Michelin Recommended

At El Buen Comer on Mission Street, Isabel Caudillo cooks the food of her childhood. Born in Mexico City, she recreates the richly flavored, homestyle dishes she was raised with, turning out authentic Mexican cuisine that has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction.

The heart of the menu is guisados —the staple of Mexico City home cooking. These are slow-cooked stews: earthy sauces simmered with meat or vegetables, served alongside rice and beans. Everything is made from scratch, using organic masa, with enchiladas hand-rolled and tortillas prepared in-house. Even the familiar tacos and enchiladas follow Mexican tradition, filled with meltingly soft shredded beef or chicken stewed slowly in Isabel's signature green and red sauces.

Beyond the guisados, Isabel offers a range of other homestyle dishes. Albondigas —savory meatballs in tomato sauce—and coditos con crema, a pasta and cream dish that has defined comfort food for generations of Mexicans, both showcase the depth of her cooking.

The space itself feels like an extension of a Mexican home kitchen—warm and welcoming, with a full bar now open to complement the meal. El Buen Comer also caters and operates a stall at the Noe Valley Farmer's Market on Saturdays, bringing this home cooking beyond the restaurant walls.
